Draining Europe's swamp

Why the left is desperate to stop conservatives gaining control of the EU
1

I was about to go live on Sky News from a Berlin street last week when the producer asked if I could adjust the camera to crop out an election poster over my shoulder.

The poster included a conspicuous image of a swastika, which we agreed would be confronting for an Australian TV audience, not least because of my location.

The return of the ugly symbol to lamp posts in the German capital is a sign of growing desperation on the European left. Having failed to stem the rising tide of conservative support in this weekend’s European parliamentary elections it has resorted to a hyperbolic scare campaign. Like the US Democrats attempts to play the Nazi card against Donald Trump, there is scant evidence that it is working.

Polling in most of the 27 European Union states shows rising support for parties with strong nationalist leanings. This is terrible news for the supranational EU project and the cosmopolitan, technocratic transnational elite who run it.
