The profanity of Chalumbin
A wind turbine development encroaches on the Jirrbal people's sacred territory
The Jirrbal, also known as the Dyirbal or Djiru, are the people of the rainforest in Far North Queensland. They retain a rich cultural heritage and a deep connection to their ancestral lands.
They have a unique language and cultural practices that are distinct from other Aboriginal groups in the region.
The Chalumbin Forest near Ravenshoe holds deep spiritual significance. That’s why the plan to build 86 giant wind turbines in this valuable area of Wet Sclerophyll Forest cannot go ahead.
I’m grateful to Jirrbal woman Georgina Wieden for helping me understand why this land should not be sacrificed for renewable energy profits.
